Old school leadership is dead. Remember that boss who made your day job stressful and anxiety filled? There’s less tolerance today for the old school micromanagement style of leadership. Today’s leadership model integrates a more holistic and empowering style. Although there is certainly a place for micromanaging, detail oriented leaders today; visionary leadership is taking up more space. In order for organizations to survive today, everyone must embrace and step into their own leadership. As more and more people decide to start businesses of their own today and become their own bosses, less people have an interest in having their personal identity attached to their corporate title. There is a revolution going on out there where people are kicking their titles to the curb and demanding to be recognized for their own gifts, contributions and leadership styles and not by their business titles.
There is a leadership revolution going on out there. Barriers and Boundaries are being knocked down and it is becoming necessary for every individual whether an employee or a business owner to unleash leadership. You Tube, Twitter, Facebook and blogs have created a boundary free space for anyone to become a leader through influence and trust.
Anyone can build a following today.
5 Ways to Unleash your Leadership:
1) Start with Yourself
You cannot lead others effectively through things you have not experienced yourself. Get in touch with your gifts and your personal challenges. Get to know yourself really well. Spend quiet time with yourself, journal, embrace mindfulness, find mentors. Be willing to cross the start and the finish line to truly discover and unleash your greatest potential.
2) Manage your energy and emotions
This is one of the most challenging steps on the leadership journey. It’s easy to do when things are going well but when you hit a rough patch; this is your true apprenticeship time. Get really present on what events, people and situations cause you to loose your cool, make you reach for a bag of cookies, or unleash those uncomfortable emotions that you so often can keep hidden. Take good notes along the way and observe how high you soar as you develop this skill. You’ll need to create a support team for yourself along the way. It’s going to take more than a yoga class to get you centered.
3) Get Inspired
Create space for yourself to become inspired. Figure out when and where you are at your best. Find out what makes you feel happy and inspired. Workout, embrace nature, get colourful, paint your office, sit near the water. Figure out what might also be blocking your inspiration. When you clear a path for inspiration to emerge, you’ll also get connected and present enough to allow your intuition to guide you in the right direction both personally and professionally.
4) Focus on Results, not excuses
Leadership is about owning it! If things don’t go your way, look at yourself! If you commit to unleashing your leadership, you must once and for all, give up the need to blame everything and anything external for your results. There’s no room for the victim in enlightened leadership. You are in charge. You have a choice at all times to focus on results or excuses. Enlightened Leader choose results and expect success.
5) Inspire Others
Identify your wonderful gifts and figure out how you can use them to inspire others. Align yourself with a project, business or purpose that you’re absolutely passionate about. Your energy and enthusiasm is guaranteed to spark someone else. Grab those opportunities to mentor others and to help others unleash their leadership. Give more than you ask for, be humble, recognize others, celebrate successes and be true to yourself.
